Gotthard Pass winter closure 2026: checking the closing date
Gotthard Pass closing date: research status for autumn 2026, official road information and the difference between the pass and road tunnel.
Planning one last drive over the Gotthard Pass this autumn? The useful question is whether the road will be open when you reach it. Last year's closing date and an old snow report cannot answer that.
Has the final 2026 closing date been confirmed?
Research checked on 22 October 2026: We did not find a final announcement of the 2026 winter closure in the operator and authority sources checked for this article. We therefore do not present a closing date as confirmed. This is a dated research finding, not a live statement that the pass is open or closed.
Consult Canton Uri's current road information for your journey. The canton warns that mountain weather can lead to restrictions at short notice, particularly in autumn and spring. Check again on the day you travel.
The pass road and road tunnel have different closures
The seasonal restriction concerns the road over the mountain between Andermatt and Airolo. It does not mean the A2 road tunnel closes for winter. The tunnel has its own restrictions, including maintenance and special-transport windows.
- For the road over the summit, use the Gotthard Pass status page.
- For the A2 tunnel, check live traffic and waiting times.
- To compare the complete journey, open the travel planner.
Temporary restrictions do not establish the winter date
An overnight or weather-related closure may be lifted. A seasonal winter closure ends through travel over the pass for the season. Read the exact wording, affected road section and validity period. A possible reopening time is not a promise that conditions will suit your later arrival.
The seasonal background on the TCS Gotthard Pass page is useful context, but it does not establish a specific closing date for 2026.
Before choosing an alternative
Check the complete route, weather and road restrictions before leaving. Review your choice again before the last useful junction, while safely stopped or with help from a passenger. Follow local signs and barriers.
If the pass is unavailable, compare the A2 with a route that is actually usable. The A13 San Bernardino tunnel and the San Bernardino mountain pass are separate roads. A shorter queue alone does not establish that a longer diversion will save time.
When this guide needs an update
Once the responsible authority confirms the seasonal closure, this page should include the date, time, affected section and direct announcement. Until then, the final date remains unconfirmed in this research. A winter closing announcement also does not establish next spring's reopening date.
