About
The independent real-time traffic monitor for the Gotthard Tunnel
Our mission
Gotthard Live was built to answer one simple question every driver asks before heading to the Alps: "Is there a queue at the Gotthard right now?"
The Gotthard Tunnel (A2, Göschenen–Airolo) is Europe's busiest north-south Alpine crossing, with over 6 million vehicles per year. On summer weekends and public holidays, queues reach 15 km and wait times exceed 2 hours. Our mission is simple: help you decide whether to go, when to go, and which route to take.
How it works
Gotthard Live aggregates data from publicly accessible sources and presents it clearly:
- Queue length in km at the north portal (Göschenen) and south portal (Airolo), updated every 60 seconds
- Estimated wait time using a calibrated formula (km × coefficient based on traffic density)
- Live webcams at both portals (AFBN/TCS network)
- Algorithmic traffic forecasts based on historical patterns, school holiday calendars and public holidays
- TCS scheduled maintenance closures
- Alternative route comparison with travel time estimates (San Bernardino A13, Simplon, Gotthard Pass road)
Data sources
Traffic data comes from:
- gotthard-traffic.ch: primary source for queue lengths in km at the portals
- TCS (Touring Club Switzerland): weekly bulletins and scheduled closures
- AFBN: motorway webcam network
- Proprietary historical patterns: 5 years of data for algorithmic forecasts
Gotthard Live is a data aggregation and visualisation service. It is not affiliated with ASTRA, TCS, or any other Swiss authority.
Real-time updates
The homepage updates automatically every 60 seconds. When you return to the page after using another app, a fresh data request is made immediately. Blog and webcam pages are regenerated server-side every 30 seconds (ISR) so that search engine crawlers always see up-to-date data.
Languages and markets
The site is available in Italian, German, French and English. Each language has its own optimised version of content and SEO metadata. English serves as the international fallback for non-native speakers and international travellers crossing Switzerland.
