Before you leave
Where can I check queues, waiting time and tunnel status?
The Gotthard Live page shows queue length at both portals, estimated waiting time, tunnel status, map, and webcams. Check again just before joining the A2: conditions can change quickly.
Why is there a traffic light before the tunnel when it looks clear inside?
Traffic is metered to maintain distance and safety in the tunnel. A queue before the portal can therefore be a controlled wait, not necessarily an incident. Always follow lights and signs.
Should I use Gotthard, San Bernardino, or the Gotthard Pass?
With a short queue, the A2 is normally fastest. When delays grow, compare total journey time with the San Bernardino A13. The pass is a seasonal scenic road: use it only when it is open, weather is suitable, and your vehicle is appropriate.
Should I follow local GPS shortcuts?
Not automatically. Local roads run through villages, may have restrictions, and can fill quickly. Compare the main alternatives before taking a long detour and obey every restriction.
In the queue and tunnel
Can I use the hard shoulder to bypass the queue?
No, unless signs explicitly open it to traffic. In Ticino, a priority lane can be activated for traffic exiting at Airolo or heading to the pass; it does not lead to the tunnel and you cannot rejoin the motorway afterwards.
What should I do when traffic stops?
Create an emergency corridor immediately, stay calm, and do not follow other vehicles onto the hard shoulder. Do not leave your vehicle or turn around. Follow signs, radio messages, and emergency services.
How long does the crossing take and why is it warm?
The road tunnel is about 17 km long. In normal conditions, the tunnel crossing itself takes roughly 12–15 minutes; traffic and metering can extend it. It can feel warm inside, so keep a safe distance and stop only when necessary.
Can I pass by motorcycle, camper, or large vehicle?
Motorcycles may use the tunnel, but noise, heat, and air require attention. Campers and tall or wide vehicles must comply with dimensions, signs, and any restrictions. Exceptional transports follow specific procedures and time windows.
Closures and key differences
What should I do if the tunnel is closed?
Check whether the closure is scheduled or unplanned and how long it is expected to last. Waiting can make sense for a short closure; for a long one, compare San Bernardino, the pass when open, Simplon, or rail according to your destination.
Are the road tunnel, base tunnel, and panoramic line the same thing?
No. Gotthard Live covers the A2 road tunnel between Göschenen and Airolo. The Gotthard Base Tunnel and the panoramic line are railway routes. A rail disruption does not automatically mean the road tunnel is closed, and vice versa.
Are webcams enough to decide?
Webcams are useful for confirming traffic, weather, and visibility at a portal, but they do not show the whole queue. Use them together with queue length, estimated wait, trend, and tunnel status.
