The Gotthard Pass attracts tourist and motorcycle traffic in summer, but rarely causes significant queues. It is a good scenic alternative to the tunnel when the tunnel is congested.

The pass closes definitively for winter usually in November, depending on the first heavy snowfalls. The exact date is communicated by FEDRO a few days in advance.

Official diversions

The Gotthard Pass is a cantonal road, not subject to ASTRA motorway diversions. The A2 tunnel is the main motorway route. If the pass is closed (winter or bad weather), the tunnel and San Bernardino are the only motorway alternatives.
